Inspired by... Milena Huhta

A Finnish-Polish artist based in Helsinki, Milena incorporates a wide range of inspiration into her eye-catching work, as she works on everything from record and book covers to editorial illustrations to tattooing. Her works include inspirations from 1990's Japanese manga and animation, sci-fi films and literature, contemporary and historical fashion, gothic subculture and many more.

More often than not, her female characters also channel a strong sexuality with a fetishistic flair. Milena tries to portray the many layers of female identity, from vulnerability to monstrous energy, manifesting in the characters' metamorphic states.

I am very inspired by her work as my work shows a clear connection to her work with the colours I use. I also used this image as the main inspiration for my work, Distraught Earth, from the way she draws her lines to the way she creates shadows. I wanted to make sure i used bold flat colours instead of blending the shadows and highlights together. Milena has a psychedelic element to her work, along with pastel colours and astrological implements, she also has a style to art nouveau that she shows in her black and white pieces (shown in her website below).
